Report of JOGMEC Techno Forum 2018
Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) held “JOGMEC Techno Forum 2018” at the Palace Hotel Tokyo on November 27, 2018. Despite the forum to be a single day event whereas the previous forum was held two days, it had attracted a large number of audience that additional seats were introduced in the venue, which indicates the keen interest toward the themes of “Gas/ LNG” and “Digital Technology”.
JOGMEC Techno Forum is an annual event that started from 2013, with the purpose to strengthen the realtionships between Japanese companies which hold various cutting-edge technologies, and resources-producing countries. This year, under the theme of “Energy Industry at Turning Point”, the 6th forum explored the latest challenges and practices in resource development, within the drastic movement of gas shift and digital transformation.

In the morning, as the representative of oil and gas producing countries and IOCs, executives from SOCAR (Azerbaijan), ADNOC (Abu Dhabi), PTTEP (Thailand), and TOTAL gave keynote speeches about their strategies for resource development and R&D, and collaborations with Japanese Companies.
In Hall A, under theme of “Gas/LNG”, the spotlight was cast on INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG project, the first large scale LNG project operated by a Japanese company. Key stakeholders involved in the gas/LNG value chain presented their business strategies along with the keywords: short term and small scale.
Followed by the presentation, the speakers gathered in an extensive panel discussion over the theme: “Diversity of LNG Business Environment”, where they reconfirmed the potential of gas/ LNG value chain and the importance of demand creation. Finally Yuki Sadamitsu, executive vice president of JOGMEC, emphasized the governmental agency’s key role for activating gas/ LNG industry.
Hall B: Digital Technology session
In Hall B, to deepen understandings on the emerging “Digital Technology” for oil and gas development, experts with digital experience from ADNOC, TOTAL, and McKinsey shared their digital journey and strategies towards digital transformation.
This was followed by a panel discussion with professionals from 3 Japanese engineering companies, led by chairman from JOGMEC. The panelists talked over the topics of; benefit and future of digital technology, how to use data, and human resource development, quoting their own practical engineering business experiences. The discussion concluded with implications that digital technology has the power to remove boundaries between business fields or even industries, and that transformation of the mind and culture is essential in order to apply digital technology to business.
The session was wrapped up by, Toshikazu Ebato, executive vice president of JOGMEC, highlighting that flexible mindset is vital for propelling real business digitalization, while digital technology is just a tool.
Along with the presentations, advanced Japanese companies and JOGMEC showcased their cutting edge technologies related to this year’s theme: “gas/LNG” or “Digital technology” at the foyer. Participants were able to see and feel the technology, and through discussion they could look into the possibility for creating new business opportunities.
