JOGMEC and the State of Queensland, Australia re-sign MOU
JOGMEC (Head office: Minato-ku Tokyo, Chairman & CEO: Tetsuhiro Hosono) and the State of Queensland, Australia, re-signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the bilateral relationship and collaborations on energy and natural resources business and projects between them on 27 May 2019 coinciding with the visit of the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Premier of Queensland.
In September 2013, JOGMEC and the State of Queensland, Australia (hereafter “QLD”) signed an MOU to encourage Japanese companies to invest in Queensland’s natural resources including oil, natural gas, metal minerals and coal through mutual exchange of information and views on relevant projects. In November 2016, JOGMEC and QLD re-signed the MOU to include ‘potential personnel exchange for further cooperation’ as a newly added agenda.
Since the signing of the MOU, JOGMEC, in collaboration with QLD, has made a number of achievements such as forming joint ventures in the fields of coal and metals and co-hosting the coal investment promotion seminars.
QLD will soon announce the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy which outlines QLD’s commitment to the development of renewable hydrogen industry in addition to the coal and natural gas industries which has been the state’s main export industries in order to achieve zero emission by 2050 and reduce CO2 emission by 30% by 2030.
Hydrogen is positioned as one of Japan’s important future energy carriers. From the perspective of comparing hydrogen to fossil fuels, JOGMEC understands the value and significance of exchanging information and opinions on hydrogen with QLD. Therefore, JOGMEC and QLD have decided to add the exchange of information and views on hydrogen-related projects to our MOU.
Coinciding with the visit of the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Premier of Queensland, JOGMEC and QLD re-signed the amended MOU at JOGMEC Head Office on 27 May 2019. In the meeting, Premier Palaszczuk said “JOGMEC and QLD has a long and close relationship founded on the collaboration in the field of coal and other natural resources. We look forward to further strengthen this relationship and to expand the areas of our collaboration to new energy such as hydrogen”.
Under this MOU, JOGMEC will continue to further strengthen the relationship with QLD in order to secure a stable supply of energy and resources to Japan.
