May 24, 2013

Opening remark by Mr. Hirobumi Kawano, President,
JOGMEC

JOGMEC (headquarters: Tokyo, president: Mr. Hirobumi Kawano) held “JOGMEC Techno Forum 2013” at Palace Hotel Tokyo on May 7 and May 8, 2013. The Forum was held in order to conduct a comprehensive discussion on current technological issues in global oil and gas developments and potential Japanese industrial technologies that could be used to overcome them. With more than 650 participants, special guests from natural resource producing countries and specialists from Japan and abroad engaged in discussions on various topics surrounding the “Solution Providing with Innovative Technologies,”* an initiative JOGMEC started in FY2013.

*”Solution Providing with Innovative Technologies”: it is a new initiative, in which JOGMEC coordinates with Japanese companies to solve technological challenges in upstream oil and gas industry.

Keynote speech by H.E. Mr. Thamir Abbas Ghadhban,

From FY2013, JOGMEC launched the “Solution Providing with Innovative Technologies.” Through this new initiative, JOGMEC aims at strengthening relationship with oil and gas producing countries as well as with their national oil and gas companies (NOCs) and international oil companies (IOCs) by utilizing cutting-edge, innovative Japanese technologies to assist them in overcoming their upstream development challenges. The “JOGMEC Techno Forum 2013” was held to introduce this new initiative to a wide range of innovative Japanese companies to create a platform of dialogue to start the matching of upstream technological challenges with potential technological solutions possessed by Japanese innovation.
At the Forum, in order to deepen the understanding of upstream oil and gas industry of participants from other industrial sectors, JOGMEC invited many speakers from upstream oil and gas industry, including H. E. Mr. Thamir Abbas Ghadhban (Chairman of the Advisory Commission, Prime Minister Office, Government of Iraq), to speak on the flow of upstream oil and gas projects as well as key technological challenges in the industry. At the Forum, JOGMEC invited specialists in the field of resource development, including unconventional resources such as shale gas, to speak on the change in global energy landscape, the potential of Japanese technologies, and the future role of JOGMEC in a panel session.
The Forum was a success, and attracted more than 650 participants, well above the original capacity of 500. Participants included not only representatives of innovative Japanese companies, but also NOCs, IOCs, and foreign embassies. The Networking Reception, held after the Forum, also attracted many participants. Some participants commented that the Forum provided a unique opportunity to listen to the specific technological challenges of NOCs, allowing them to consider ways to match innovative technologies with the needs of NOCs.
JOGMEC is committed to continuing the new initiative, the “Solution Providing with Innovative Technologies,” to match the innovative, cutting-edge technologies of Japanese companies with technological needs of NOCs. Using the valuable comments from our participants, JOGMEC plans to host the next “JOGMEC Techno Forum” in the fall of 2014.
