The 26th Coal Investment Promotion Seminar

September 3, 2019

JOGMEC (Head office: Minato-ku Tokyo, Chairman and CEO- Tetsuhiro Hosono) held the 26th Coal Investment Promotion Seminar on 26th August 2019 to discuss the Queensland Mineral & Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) 2018 legislation as well as recent cases of environmental approvals.
JOGMEC regularly invites government officials from coal producing countries as well as executive officers from coal-related businesses to present at the ‘Coal Investment Promotion Seminars’ on the policies of coal-producing countries and the development of coal-related projects.

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the comprehensive and strategic partnership between Queensland (QLD), Australia and JOGMEC, we invited Mr. Simon Hanrahan (mining engineer) and Mr. Chris Woodfull (geologist) from SRK Consulting, an international consulting firm based in Queensland, on 26th August 2019 to discuss the following theme at the seminar: “Australian Coal Sector- an evolving and at times challenging landscape”.

At the seminar, Mr. Hanrahan and Mr. Woodfull explored the effects of the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Act 2018 approved in QLD in 2018, additionally specific issues related to recent examples of environmental approvals and the lessons that can be learned from them, while also discussing the different authorization procedures in NSW and QLD. Mr. Hanrahan and Mr. Woodfull specifically referred to the Carmichael coal mine (North QLD) which has attracted a lot of attention this year as well as the Rocky Hill coal mine (NSW) as case studies when discussing environmental approvals.

Representatives from trading, iron and steel, electric power and resource companies took part in this seminar.
