Technological development
This activity aims to develop engineering technologies to increase efficiency and reduce costs of mine pollution prevention measures at all suspended or abandoned mines, regardless of the existence of their owners, and to promote the application of those technologies.
JOGMEC has successfully developed several technologies that have demonstrated their usefulness and that are applied to many mines. These technologies would contribute greatly to the reduction of costs for mine pollution prevention measures.
・Research and Development of Passive Treatment Technology
Passive treatment is an energy saving and environment-friendly water treatment technology. This technology can greatly reduce the cost of mine water treatment. The advantage of passive treatment technology is that it fully uses the natural cleaning function of microorganisms and vegetation to precipitate, remove or absorb the toxic metals. JOGMEC is carrying out various tests aiming to introduce passive treatment on site in the near future.

Development of “JOGMEC process”
JOGMEC has taken research and development for a methodology of passive treatment which uses natural purification capacity by the activity of microorganisms. JOGMEC had conducted basic studies and verification tests on neutral mine drainage using this methodology. As a result, the significant effects of metals removal was confirmed, and then two field tests were started treating acid mine drainage and has confirmed stable metal removal.
