Online seminar held on topic of Sustainability in the resources (coal) industry with Australia’s Queensland government
JOGMEC (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Chairman & CEO: Tetsuhiro Hosono) co-hosted an online seminar with the theme of low carbon society, one of sustainability in the resources (coal) industry with Australia’s Queensland government on June 10, 2021, which enjoyed active exchanges of opinions among a lot of Japanese participants.
The State of Queensland, Australia (QLD) is one of world leading coal producing regions and resources sector is one of their key industries. Because of this, JOGMEC and the QLD Government signed an MOU in September 2013 to form a strategic partnership and we have held numerous seminars for Japanese companies to promote investment into QLD resources sector since then.
We invited Deputy Director General of QLD Department of Environment and Science, Dr. Karen Hussey and Mr. Brett Joyce and colleagues from local consulting company GHD as speakers to present on the theme of “Undertakings of Queensland Government and Local resources companies to head toward low carbon society”.
In the presentation, we received an explanation of the QLD Government’s environment policy on climate change and investment plans, including their impact on resource development plans. (For example, EIS etc). GHD presented on Australian companies various ESG undertakings and examples of low carbon case studies from local resource companies, including use of CCS at power station, production of blue hydrogen by gas company, use of renewable energy at mine site and production of ammonia through coal gasification etc.
150 attendees from Japanese and Australian representatives of Japanese trading companies, steel companies, utilities companies, power companies and resource companies, which demonstrates the high level of interest in decarbonization of Japanese companies.
JOGMEC will continue to hold seminars that provide useful information on securing stable supply of resources and climate change policy/ decarbonization.
