JOGMEC signs MOU with Zimbabwe
- Tech Transfer at JOGMEC Geologic Remote Sensing Centre in Botswana-
On Thursday, September 10th, 2015 in Harare, Zimbabwe, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President : Mr. Hirobumi Kawano ) and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Zimbabwe (MMMD : Harare, Zimbabwe, Minister : Hon. Walter Chidakwa ) have entered into the MOU in order to strengthen bilateral relations and attract investments in Zimbabwe’s mining sector by Japanese companies.
The signing ceremony took place at Ministry of Mines and Mining Development in Harare, Zimbabwe on Thursday September 10th with cooperation of Embassy of Japan. JOGMEC Senior Councilor Mr. Daisuke Matsunaga, Ambassador Yoshi Tendai Hiraishi, Deputy Minister Hon. Fred Moyo and Prof. Francis Gudyanga, MMMD Permanent Secretary, attended the ceremony and signed the MOU on behalf of JOGMEC President Mr. Hirobumi Kawano and MMMD Minister Hon. Walter Chidakwa respectively.
The bilateral meeting between JOGMEC President and MMMD Minister on the occasion of Japan-Africa Mining & Resources Business Seminar 2015 (J-SUMIT2), which took place in Tokyo, May this year, became a positive turning point to end the five years of negotiation.
Following the signing and the official announcement of two-year extension of the second phase of the project at JOGMEC Geologic Remote Sensing Centre in Botswana on the occasion of J-SUMIT2, JOGMEC will provide technical transfer of remote sensing and GIS with Zimbabwean geologists in this fiscal year at JOGMEC Geologic Remote Sensing Centre in Botswana.
This is a very important milestone for JOGMEC, having achieved signing with all of thirteen SADC member states which have a Geological Survey Department.
JOGMEC continues its active support for Japanese companies’ exploration and development activities in mining sector to secure the stable supply of resources and its contribution to development of mining industry and improvement of investment climate by building and strengthening relations with resource-rich countries.

・JOGMEC provides technical transfer of satellite image analysis at JOGMEC Geologic Remote Sensing Centre in Botswana to geologists of Geological Survey Department of Zimbabwe (GSD).
・JOGMEC and GSD conduct a joint fieldwork to verify geological features and mineral deposits identified by remote sensing and GIS.
Second phase of the project of JOGMEC Geological Remote Sensing Centre in Botswana
JOGMEC Geological Remote Sensing Centre was established in July 2008 in Botswana. Since then, the centre has conducted mineral exploration and technical training for geologists from SADC countries. Its second stage, initially set for fiscal 2013-2015, has recently been extended for another two years till March 2018, focusing more on creating exploration projects to reflect the results of selecting promising areas and joint surveys with participating countries.
