JOGMEC Seminar on Sustainable Development of Mineral Resources for the Mining Sector of Zimbabwe
~The Cooperative Project based on “Japan-Africa Ministerial Partnership for Resources Development”~
Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Mr. Keisuke Kuroki) conducted the Seminar on “Sustainable Development of Mineral Resources for the Mining Sector of Zimbabwe” co-organized by Ministry of Mines and Mining Development of Zimbabwe (MMMD) in Harare, Zimbabwe on March 3rd, 2016.
The Seminar is one of the activities under “Japan-Africa Ministerial Partnership for Resources Development” which was announced in the second Japan-Africa Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo on May 30th, 2015. The objective of the Seminar is to share information about Japanese technologies and knowhow on the metals exploration and environmental conservation in Zimbabwe which has much potential of mineral resources and contribute to strengthening the relationship between Zimbabwe and Japan.
The Seminar is based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MMMD and JOGMEC agreed in September, 2015. It was the 5th JOGMEC Seminar in Africa after having seminars in Zambia, South Africa, Madagascar and Botswana.
Nearly 130 people of both public and private sector of Zimbabwe and Japan participated in the Seminar. H.E. Mr.Yoshi Tendai Hiraishi, Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe mentioned in his opening remarks that the Seminar is historically very important and Japanese technologies and knowhow about metals exploration and environmental conservation would contribute to the sustainable development of mining industry in Zimbabwe. He also showed his expectation about JOGMEC’s initiative to induce Japanese investment in Zimbabwe in the future.
JOGMEC had presentations about its exploration in Africa and the Remote Sensing Techniques and their projects towards the South African Development Community (SADC) member countries. JOGMEC also presented its role and technologies on mine pollution prevention.
On the other hand, Zimbabwe side explained updated situation of their mining policies, exploration and environmental conservation.
Mr. Daisuke Matsunaga, Senior Councilor of JOGMEC summarized the Seminar and showed his appreciation to the Seminar participants as his closing remarks.
JOGMEC will continue its cooperation with resource rich countries such as African countries based on the needs of such countries and the circumstances of mining industry in the world.

MOU Agreement between JOGMEC and MMMD on September 10th, 2015
(The contents of MOU)
-JOGMEC and Geological Survey Department (GSD) of Zimbabwe will conduct the Training Program and cooperative analysis utilizing the Remote Sensing techniques and Geological Information System.
-JOGMEC and GSD will implement ground truth checking to specify the potential areas of mineral resources.
