Results of the First Comprehensive Survey on LNG Handling Volume by Japanese Companies
JOGMEC conducted a survey on the volume of LNG handled by Japanese companies with the full cooperation of all 30 companies which handle LNG, and published the results on April 22nd, 2022 on the website. This survey is newly conducted to understand the volume of LNG handled by Japanese companies in relation to the national LNG policy defined in the "New International Resource Strategy". JOGMEC will continue its efforts to improve the flexibility and liquidity of the LNG market in order to enhance energy security.
"New International Resources Strategy" formulated in March 2020 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) states that in order to enhance LNG security and maintain Japan's influence in the international LNG market, it is important to be actively involved in the creation and expansion of LNG demand in Asian countries and contribute to the formation of a highly liquid and deep international LNG market. From this perspective, the policy also calls for a shift in LNG policy toward encouraging the involvement of Japanese companies in transactions supplied to third countries (“external trade”), not only in imports of LNG, but also in the entire value chain from production to receiving of LNG, and to promote necessary measures.
Under this policy, understanding the importance of monitoring the volume of LNG handled by Japanese companies, JOGMEC has launched a new survey with the objective of confirming the volume of LNG handled by Japanese companies, including “external trade”. The results of this survey indicate that the volume of LNG handled by Japanese companies in FY2018, FY2019, and FY2020 was approximately 96 million tons, 105 million tons, and 110 million tons, respectively. JOGMEC will continue to conduct the same survey in the future.
