This was the first workshop in Vietnam focusing on CCS business environment.
JOGMEC and PetroVietnam, with co-sponsorship from JX-NOEX, held a CCS Business Environment Workshop on October 30, 2024 in Danang, Vietnam to promote establishment of CCS business environment in Vietnam. Approximately 150 participants attended the workshop, including government officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Vietnam, among others, who are working towards carbon neutral activities from both Vietnam and Japan, and multiple stakeholders involved in the energy sector in Vietnam.

This workshop was conducted under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concluded between JOGMEC and PetroVietnam in 2007. JOGMEC and PetroVietnam have collaborated on various activities since then and exended the MOU in 2022, which extended CCS as new collaborative activity to further strengthen the relationship. Under the MOU, both parties concluded a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) for the CCS study in Vietnam in February 2024 and have been conducting the study with the aim of enabling private companies to launch a CCS project in Vietnam in the 2030s. JX-NOEX has been involved in the JSA as a foundation contractor for JOGMEC and is advancing the potential commercialization of CCS in Vietnam.

In order to launch a CCS project in Vietnam, it is important to establish relevant laws and regulations, business model, and raise of public awareness and acceptance of CCS. JOGMEC and PetroVietnam expect that the understandings and knowledges obtained through this workshop will contribute the establishment of CCS business environment in Vietnam, enabling private companies to launch CCS businesses in Vietnam in the near future. Moreover, JOGMEC will strive to contribute to the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two countries in their efforts towards Carbon Neutrality.
