In February 2024, JOGMEC signed an MOU with H2Global (note), and has regularly exchanged views on issues and responses for the hydrogen supply chain construction. JH2A also signed an MOU with H2Global in June 2024 and has been building a cooperative framework in the hydrogen field.
This seminar was held online and aimed to promote understanding among Japanese and German companies and organizations involved in the hydrogen industry by introducing Japanese and German initiatives and support systems for the establishment of an international supply chain for hydrogen, and to share understanding of future initiatives for the establishment and expansion of the market.
The event was attended by over approximately 400 participants from various industries, including energy, trading, finance, manufacturing, construction, public organizations, and universities. During the seminar, Japanese and German officials from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), introduced their countries' initiatives and support systems for the establishment of an international hydrogen supply chain and shared not only policy perspectives such as energy transition and hydrogen strategy, but also industry perspectives on the global commoditization of hydrogen.
JOGMEC introduced the support system focusing on price gap, and JH2A showed their newly established hydrogen fund. H2Global reported new infrastructure development, demand stimulation, and support system analysis. The joint analysis by JOGMEC and H2Global of the support system focusing on price gap by Japanese government was also presented.
In addition, during the discussion session, many opinions on issues related to the creation of a clean hydrogen market and the importance of ensuring transparency and liquidity in the market were pointed out. For Japanese companies to develop their business, it was suggested that international standards and certifications should be developed in terms of trade, and strategies for open technology and core intellectual property that should be kept confidential were necessary.
Considering the outcomes of the collaboration with H2Global, JOGMEC continues to support the establishment of a value chain for clean hydrogen in cooperation with METI and will steadily promote “Support focusing on the price gap” and “Support for the development of hubs”.
