JOGMEC signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Province of Alberta, Canada
- Toward Securing Stable Supply of Natural Resources and Social Implementation of Hydrogen, Ammonia, and CCUS -
Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and the Government of Alberta, Canada, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 11, 2025, with the main purpose of collaboration on oil and natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia, and carbon capture, utilization and storage.
The province of Alberta is rich in natural resources, particularly in oil and natural gas, and is expected to have great potential for hydrogen and ammonia production. In the field of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), Alberta has a well-developed business environment, including a legal framework, a carbon pricing system and government support programs. As a result, Alberta is internationally recognized as a leader in this field, and CCUS projects are being actively pursued.
In 2017, JOGMEC and the Government of Alberta signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote mutual cooperation in the oil and natural gas field. In 2021, the scope of cooperation was expanded to include hydrogen, ammonia, and CCUS. Since then, both parties have actively engaged in discussions and exchanges of views on the realization of hydrogen and ammonia projects in Alberta, as well as on the design of regulatory frameworks for CCUS projects.
To further strengthen such collaboration, our Chairman & CEO TAKAHARA Ichiro and Hon. Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, agreed on the renewal of the MOU and signed it on March 11, 2025, at CERAWeek 2025 in Houston, Texas, USA.
Through this MOU, JOGMEC will further deepen its cooperative relationship with the Province of Alberta and contribute to the stable supply of energy and resources to Japan and the realization of a carbon neutral society.
