Equity investment to fluorite exploration project in Australia
―Contribution to strengthening and diversifying the supply chain―
Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) hereby announces its participation in the Speewah fluorite exploration project in Australia, owned by Tivan Limited. (Executive Chairman: Grant Wilson), together with Sumitomo Corporation (Representative Director, President and CEO: Shingo Ueno).
JOGMEC and Sumitomo Corporation have jointly established a special purpose company, Japan Fluorite Corporation (President and CEO: Itaru Hirai) to participate in the project. Japan Fluorite Corporation plans to invest up to AUD 11 million in the operating company, Fluorite SPV to cover exploration costs, with JOGMEC contributing 49% of the investment.
The project is currently in the exploration stage. Once it progresses to the development stage, it is expected to produce 140,000 tons of chemical grade fluorite concentrate annually. As a joint investor, Sumitomo Corporation will acquire the right to offtake up to 15% of the production. Additionally, at the development stage, Sumitomo Corporation will have the right to acquire up to 100% of the production by contributing a certain amount of funding.
Fluorite, the product of this project, is a key industrial mineral used as a raw material for hydrofluoric acid, which is essential for semiconductor manufacturing and refrigerant. As such, stable demand is expected in the future. The project will contribute to diversifying the sources of fluorite and ensuring a stable supply of resources to Japan.
JOGMEC will continue to actively support exploration and development efforts to help secure a stable supply of metal resources.
