JOGMEC announces the publication of the first version of a recommended guideline for the implementation of carbon dioxide capture and storage projects.

May 30, 2022

JOGMEC is pleased to announce the publication of the first version of a “recommended guideline for the implementation of Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage projects(JOGMEC CCS guideline).” JOGMEC will maximize its experience in resource development accumulated over the past 50 years, and as a core organization responsible for energy security, will strengthen its support for LNG, hydrogen, ammonia, and CCS projects being promoted by Japanese companies.
JOGMEC aligns its mission with that of the Japanese government to achieve a Carbon Neutral society by 2050 and has been promoting the CCS(Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage)projects led by Japanese companies.

As a way of laying out the necessary systems for implementation of the CCS projects and calculate the CO2 storage and GHG reduction amount, JOGMEC hereby announces the publication of the first version of a “Recommended guideline for the implementation of Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage Projects (CCS guideline).”

This guideline aims to promote CCS business and assert the view of JOGMEC on CCS business. While referring to individual standards, guidelines, and the literature that cover each component of CCS, this guideline provides a recommendation for the entire CO2 sequestration project, from planning until closure. This includes the selection of areas that are suitable for CO2 storage and potential CO2 storage amount, technical guidelines throughout the project, monitoring guidelines for safety reasons, and GHG calculation methodologies for evaluating CO2 reduction amount, enabling users to seamlessly evaluate the entire project.

This guideline has been subjected to a public consultation, and the comments have been incorporated. JOGMEC thanks various constructive input to the guideline during the public consultation. JOGMEC aims to apply this guideline to its joint research projects and continuously revise it to be an appropriate recommended guideline. We also intend to study methodologies to quantify the amount of CO2 storage through CO2-EOR (enhanced oil recovery by carbon dioxide injection).

JOGMEC possesses the subsurface evaluation technology over the past 50 years and technological engineering facility acquired through studies and demonstration tests. We seek to apply these technologies to CCS projects, support Japanese companies, and expand the operations.
