PT Pertamina (Persero) (“Pertamina”) ,PT Pertamina EP (“PEP”) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (“JOGMEC”) announced a joint study on implementation of CO2 injection at the Jatibarang Field in West Jawa, Indonesia.
Through this joint study, Pertamina, PEP and JOGMEC will jointly implement CO2 injection within this year as the initial stage of CO2 enhanced oil recovery (“EOR”) and carbon capture and storage (“CCS”) for the field. The purpose of the injection is to demonstrate and verify the effect of CO2 EOR and CO2 storage in the subsurface formations for a depleted oil and gas field.
This is the first time that Pertamina and PEP will implement CO2 injection into an oil and gas field in Indonesia, and will be an important step for the country to increase oil production and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by implementing CO2 EOR as part of carbon capture, utilization and storage (“CCUS”) technology.
The signing ceremony for the joint study agreement was held as the side event of G20 Energy Transition Working Group in Bali, Indonesia on 30th August 2022 witnessed by H.E. Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources in Indonesia and Ms. Nicke Widyawati, President Director & CEO, Pertamina.
Pertamina, PEP and JOGMEC will proactively engage in energy transition towards a net zero carbon society, while fulfilling their responsibility for the development and stable supply of energy over the long-term.
