Commencement of CO2 Injection at the onshore oil field, Indonesia
Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation(“JOGMEC”), PT Pertamina(Persero)(“Pertamina”), and PT Pertamina EP(“PEP”)announced the commencement of CO2 injection as the initial stage of CO2 enhanced oil recovery(“EOR”)and carbon capture and storage(“CCS”)at the Jatibarang field in West Jawa, Indonesia.
Through this project, JOGMEC, Pertamina, and PEP jointly implement CO2 Huff and Puff test as the initial stage of CO2 enhanced oil recovery(“EOR”)and carbon capture and storage(“CCS”)for the field, based on the Joint Study Agreement signed in August 2022. The test is conducted to acquire data that demonstrate and verify the effect of CO2 EOR and CO2 storage in the subsurface formations of depleted oil and gas fields.
On October 26, 2022, a ceremony was held at the Jatibarang field to commence CO2 injection, witnessed by Dr. Tutuka Ariadji, Director General of Oil and Gas, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia.
This is the first time that Pertamina and PEP will implement CO2 injection into an oil and gas field in Indonesia, and will be an important step for the country to increase oil production and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by implementing CO2 EOR as part of carbon capture, utilization and storage(“CCUS”)technology.
For JOGMEC, this will be the second implementation of CO2 injection pilot test in South-East Asia region since the one in offshore Vietnam in 2011. The test will be an important step toward decarbonization in South-East Asia region.
JOGMEC engage this project as a part of Asia Energy Transition Initiative(AETI)promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI), and the project is an initiative that contributes to the construction of a CCUS network in Asia region. JOGMEC Pertamina, and PEP will proactively engage in energy transition towards a net zero carbon society, while fulfilling their responsibility for the development, and stable supply of energy over the long-term.
