JOGMEC and Aramco explore strengthened cooperation in the field of hydrogen, fuel ammonia and supporting projects
Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Aramco to cooperate in the field of lower-carbon hydrogen and fuel ammonia.
JOGMEC and Aramco explore closer ties to support a more stable energy supply to Japan.
In October 2022, JOGMEC signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with Aramco to collaborate on project support, technology development, and human resource development in the field of lower-carbon hydrogen and fuel ammonia, which are expected to be lower-carbon energy sources with potential to support future carbon neutrality.
Under the MOC, JOGMEC and Aramco have now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), in which they express their intention to explore areas of collaboration along the fuel ammonia value chain, to enable production from Saudi Arabia to be economically used at large scale in Japan. This will focus on specific areas of possible synergies, such as supply chain set-up, standards, certification, and regulations or financial assistance.
Aramco aspires to be a major producer of lower-carbon hydrogen and fuel ammonia, and is a well-established crude oil and natural gas player. Japan is also anticipated to be a major consumer of lower-carbon hydrogen and fuel ammonia. Collaborations between both parties through the MOC and MOU contribute to strengthening the relationship, potentially helping contribute to the establishment of the lower-carbon hydrogen and ammonia market.
JOGMEC intends to actively fulfill its mission to help Japanese companies leverage lower-carbon hydrogen and fuel ammonia to support Japan’s decarbonization efforts.
