Signing of Agreement on Joint Study to Verify GHG Emissions of Clean Ammonia Production Project in UAE

April 18, 2023

Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), ADNOC, Mitsui & Co., Ltd (Mitsui), and INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX), signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) for a joint study to verify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of clean ammonia production project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
JOGMEC, ADNOC, a reliable and responsible provider of lower-carbon intensity energy, Mitsui, and INPEX, signed SCA for a joint study the GHG emissions of a clean ammonia production project in the UAE. The agreement was signed in the presence of NISHIMURA Yasutoshi, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, and TAKAHARA Ichiro, Chairman & CEO of JOGMEC, at a bilateral meeting held at the 2023 G7 Ministers' Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment on April 16, 2023.

Signing Ceremony in Sapporo, Japan

This joint study will verify the methods for calculating the amount of GHG emissions and Carbon Intensity (CI) (Note 1) for ammonia production from by-product hydrogen in the UAE and the CO2 reduction methods and reduction volumes through CO2-EOR (Note 2) as geological storage with capturing emitted CO2 in the project.

JOGMEC will lead this joint study together with ADNOC to verify the reliable CI calculation method for fuel ammonia between Japan and the UAE, contributing to a stable supply of clean fuel ammonia to Japan in the future.

JOGMEC published the GHG and CI Guidelines (1st edition) and CCS Guidelines (1st edition) in May last year, and the newly developed CI Guidelines (2nd edition) and CO2-EOR Guidelines (1st edition) are currently undergoing public comments. Including the engagement of this joint study, JOGMEC will promote international cooperation in CCS, clean hydrogen and ammonia projects, and contribute to ensuring energy security and realizing a carbon-neutral society in Japan.

(Note 1) Carbon Intensity: CO2 emissions volume per a unit of energy
(Note 2) CO2-EOR: A kind of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The technology that aims to achieve both geological storage of CO2 and economic benefits through improving the production rate of the crude oil.
