JOGMEC, METI and PETRONAS have initiated discussions on cross-border of CO2 transportation
Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on the cross-border of CO2 transportation and storage that contributes to greenhouse gas reduction at the 3rd Asia CCUS Network Forum held on September 27, 2023, in Hiroshima, Japan.

Malaysia, with its various natural resources, has long been an important partner for Japan, and many energy projects in which Japanese companies have participated have made progress. Malaysia has high potential not only for natural gas, but also to produce clean energy such as hydrogen and fuel ammonia, and discussions are already underway with Japanese companies. Malaysia has also been discussing the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as an energy source.
Furthermore, Malaysia has an abundance of area suitable for geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2), so the two countries signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) to promote discussions on the cross-border of CO2 transportation and storage between the two countries, which will contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction.
This is based on the statement of the Asia Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) Public-Private Investment Forum hosted by METI, held in Tokyo on March 3, 2023, which recognized that addressing climate change is a common global challenge and that the goal is to promote cooperation toward carbon neutrality/net zero emissions while ensuring energy security. The AZEC is in line with the Asia Zero Emissions Community's (AZEC) commitment to promote cooperation toward carbon neutrality/net zero emissions, while recognizing that addressing climate change is a common global challenge and ensuring energy security. Based on the Asia Energy Transition Initiative (AETI)(Note) and other initiatives, we will contribute to the improvement of Japan's energy security and the realization of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in Malaysia and other Asian countries. We will contribute to the realization of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in Malaysia and the rest of Asia.
