May 15, 2024

On April 16, 2024, JOGMEC and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), invited Mr. Paul Kabuswe, Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, and five other delegates from the Republic of Zambia to Japan to hold a Mining Investment Seminar. Zambia provided information on its mining policy and investment environment at the seminar. After that, they exchange their opinions with participants.

Mr. Kabswe, answering questions in Q&A session

Zambia has various mineral resources such as cobalt and manganese as well as copper, which Zambia is the sixth largest producer in the world. In particular, copper is widely used in electric wires and electrical products. Furthermore, it is essential for electric vehicles and solar panels, for which demand has increased due to the recent energy transition. In addition, Zambia has set a target to increase its annual copper production to 3 million tons and is actively engaged in copper exploration and attracting foreign companies. Therefore, JOGMEC has agreed to implement JV exploration projects, satellite image analysis of the entire country using satellite such as HISUI (a satellite that equips the latest high-performance sensor), and joint geological surveys to larger areas.

The seminar involved with a five members delegation led by Minister Kabuswe, Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, and from Japan about 90 participants, including trading companies, manufacturers, financial institutions, and government agencies related to the mining industry. At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Kabuswe gave a keynote speech, and Zambian government officials introduced their country's mining policy and investment environment. They also expressed their expectations for strengthening cooperation with JOGMEC and Japanese companies.
Taku Ishii, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for METI, expressed his hope that the seminar would further strengthen the network between the two countries and promote the further development of the mining industry in both countries. JOGMEC also introduced the JV exploration project in Zambia.

During the Q&A session, there was a lively exchange of opinions. Minister Kabuswe was responding directly to many questions on transport infrastructure, taxation, ESG, and other issues to help foster enthusiasm for future mining investment.
In closing remarks, JOGMEC, Chairman and CEO Ichiro Takahara, expressed his appreciation for the delegation's visit to Japan as well as his commitment to further strengthening the mining relationship between the two countries.

JOGMEC, collaborating with METI, will continue to work on resource diplomacy and further strengthen relations with Zambia and other African countries to ensure a stable supply of metal and mineral resources to Japan.
