Drastic expansion of the organizational framework toward a virtuous cycle of economy and environment

JOGMEC （Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Chairman & CEO: Tetsuhiro Hosono） established the “Carbon Neutral Promotion Headquarters” on April 1, 2021, to promote activities aimed at contributing toward the achievement of a carbon neutral society. We as an organization fully promote activities that contribute to carbon neutrality and contribute toward a sustainable society through ensuring energy security.
JOGMEC was established in 2004. Since then, we have promoted various efforts toward attaining low carbonization of energy resources; these include: CO2EOR （enhanced oil recovery）, metal recycling, and geothermal development.
In December 2018, JOGMEC announced the “JOGMEC’s Initiative for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals （SDGs）” of which one of the five pillars of “Tracking Climate Change and Contributing to the Establishment of a Recycling-Based Society”. Furthermore, in July 2020, we newly established the “CCS Group”, strengthening support toward the development of oil and gas with low environmental load using the CCS technology. In this manner, JOGMEC flexibly responds to changes in the business environment and has been improving the management of the organization.
Demands for climate change countermeasures have increased dramatically in recent years. Japan also has clearly indicated its national policy on reaching carbon neutrality and a decarbonized society by 2050, and efforts by the government and the private sector are accelerating.
Under such circumstances, JOGMEC established the “Carbon Neutral Promotion Headquarters” on April 1, 2021. The establishment strategically invests the accumulated expertise and business knowledge, and strongly promotes activities that contribute to carbon neutrality beyond the conventional organizational framework. Scope of projects eligible for the support will be expanded without being constrained by the convention and individual support will also be further enhanced. Furthermore, we will actively address new roles and functions required of JOGMEC in the future.
We plan to announce our policy and concrete efforts toward the realization of a carbon neutral society soon.
