In light of the dramatically changing environment surrounding the oil and natural gas development, JOGMEC has reviewed the directionality of technical and technological development at JOGMEC/TRC (Note 1). A technical business strategy was formulated in order to provide proactive strategic business support that meets the growing social needs and thereby strengthen Japan’s energy security.
In recent days, oil and natural gas development must consider climate change issues, as is clearly stated in the New International Resource Strategy (announced by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on March 30, 2020).
To respond to this issue, JOGMEC/TRC will tackle these various social challenges arising from the development and consumption of hydrocarbon resources. In particular, there are three central pillars of a new technical business strategy;
- Contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society
- Pursue new possibilities in oil and gas field development
- Strengthen foundational technologies for technical evaluation of exploration and development projects
To contribute to the low-carbon society, a new “CCS Group” was established on July 1, 2020, under the Oil & Gas Upstream Technology Unit to facilitate and support projects which integrate CCS with natural resource development and develop related technologies, which leads to oil and gas field development with a low environmental impact.
In line with this directionality, JOGMEC will advance our concrete efforts in cooperation with related stakeholders and aim to become a hub for technology, information, and human resources pertaining to oil and gas field development toward a future low-carbon society.
