Commencement of Joint Feasibility Study on CCS for Creation of a Supply Chain of Low Carbon Ammonia in Western Australia
JOGMEC and Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd (“MEPAU”) which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (“Mitsui”, Head Office: Tokyo, President and Chief Executive Officer: HORI Kenichi) have signed a collaborative research and development agreement which aims to conduct a joint feasibility study on the Carbon Capture and Storage ("CCS") to create a supply chain of low carbon ammonia in Western Australia.
JOGMEC will promote the realization of a low-carbon society through the stable and economical supply of cleaner energy.

On April 20, 2021, JOGMEC has formulated the "Carbon Neutral Initiative" to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. Fully leveraging JOGMEC’s expertise on subsurface and surface technologies, JOGMEC is promoting low carbon hydrogen and ammonia projects through the technical support for CCS.
JOGMEC have signed a collaborative research and development agreement with MEPAU as a part of JOGMEC’s "Carbon Neutral Initiative". With this agreement, JOGMEC and MEPAU will conduct a joint feasibility study on CCS to create a supply chain of low carbon ammonia in Western Australia.
MEPAU is currently developing the Waitsia gas field in Western Australia as an operator, in which it holds a 50% working interest. MEPAU also holds a 100% working interest in a depleted gas field close to the Waitsia gas field. JOGMEC and Mitsui will investigate the feasibility of the low carbon ammonia supply chain in Western Australia, using Mitsui’s existing gas assets and its capability to develop oil and gas assets to produce low carbon ammonia for export to Japan.
Specifically, JOGMEC and Mitsui will consider production and export of low carbon ammonia made from hydrogen generated from natural gas produced from the Waitsia gas field, and storing the CO2 emitted from the process into the nearby depleted gas field. This joint study will research the effectiveness of CCS in the depleted gas field.
JOGMEC will promote the realization of a low-carbon society with the stable and economical supply of natural resources and energy through low carbon hydrogen and ammonia production, including the implementation of this study.
