Achieved the goal of JAPAN-GTL Demonstration Test Project before ending it
- Established JAPAN-GTL process applicable to commercial projects -
Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC, President: Hirobumi Kawano) and the Nippon GTL Technology Research Association (Board Chairperson: Ikutoshi Matsumura; hereafter "Nippon GTL Association") successfully achieved the goal of establishing JAPAN-GTL process (*) by 11,000 hours of demonstration operations since April 2009, before ending the JAPAN-GTL Demonstration Test Project in Niigata with the capacity of 500 barrels per day (80 kilo-litter).
JAPAN-GTL process is a groundbreaking technology that would for the first time ever allow for natural gas containing carbon dioxide to be used directly. It is able to convert not only natural gas, but shale gas, coal bed methane (CBM) and so on as a raw material into petroleum products, and is an extremely effective means to gain alternative fuel sources to petroleum and achieve the diversification of primary energy supplies. The fuels produced by GTL technology is also expected to be environmentally-friendly clean fuels.
JOGMEC has been conducted preliminary feasibility studies to apply JAPAN-GTL process to gas assets of national oil corporations and international companies. JOGMEC will continue to achieve a stable energy supply for Japan and harmony with the global environment.

GTL is short for Gas-To-Liquids. The technology allows for production of petroleum products such as naphtha, kerosene, and diesel oils from natural gas through chemical reactions.
JAPAN-GTL is different from the overseas technologies advanced by Sasol in South Africa and Shell and it features in utilizing carbon dioxide gas as raw material, so that it is a groundbreaking technology that would for the first time ever allow for natural gas containing carbon dioxide to be used directly. This technology focusing on the FT synthetic process can also be applied to produce clean fuels from coal as well as natural gas, shale gas and coal seam gas.
