JOGMEC launches a new geological study project in East Siberia
in cooperation with Gazprom Neft

June 2, 2012

JOGMEC (President: Hirobumi Kawano) announced that it entered into the joint study agreement with Gazprom Neft, a subsidiary of Russian national energy company, Gazprom, to jointly evaluate the oil & natural gas potential in Ignyalinsky license block in the Irkutsk region, Russia. The signing ceremony between JOGMEC and Gazprom Neft was held in Russia's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2012 on June 22.
Ignyalinsky license block, 100% held by Gazprom Neft at the moment, is located about 1,000km north-northeast of the city of Irkutsk.
JOGMEC and Gazprom Neft plan 3D seismic shooting and well drilling in the framework of the joint study by the end of 2013. JOGMEC plans to bridge this joint study with the participation of the Japanese private sector in the license block in the future if the study shows promising results.
As the block is surrounded by several oil and/or gas fields such as Verkhnechonskoye and Talakanskoye fields and is situated in closely to running of East Siberia-Pacific Ocean Pipeline (ESPO), the synergy of these would back up the early development of future commercial-scale discoveries.
Oil and natural gas potential in the East Siberia has not been thoroughly evaluated due to its harsh environmental condition and lack of infrastructure although it is geographically in the proximity of Japan and expected to have large reserves. This joint study will contribute to promoting the geological evaluation in this area, and JOGMEC expects good results.
